Proud of Uncle Brandon . . .

So, my brother Brandon is currently serving in the Army in Iraq. Our whole family is proud of Brandon and his wife and kids for all they are sacrificing this year. Grant, however, may be Brandon's biggest fan. Grant, very much a pacifist who dislikes even toy weapons, is quite enamored these days by his soldier uncle. He often asks for details about what Brandon is doing in Iraq and asks questions like "what time is it in Iraq?". Every time Grant prays, he prays for his Uncle Brandon's safety and thanks God "for what Uncle Brandon is doing for our country."

When we went on vacation last week we found that Grant's reverence for Brandon's service extends to other soldiers as well. We were checking into our hotel in Orlando and a soldier walked into the hotel lobby. Grant's eyes grew as he studied the soldier's uniform. Grant marched over to the guy and said with a boldness and seriousness beyond his eight years, "I want to thank you for all that you are doing for our country." The soldier bent down and shook Grant's hand and told him that he was very welcome. A week later on the plane ride home, after seven days of all the excitement that Disney World could offer, Grant asked me, "Do you remember when I saw that soldier and told him thank you?" The exchange had made quite an impact on Grant.

Brandon, I hope that you know that you have an eight year old in Missouri who thinks you are a hero!!
